Venue: Villa Park
Kick-off: 16:00

Davies doubtful for Villa

Aston Villa central defender Curtis Davies is a major doubt because of a long-standing shoulder problem and Shane Lowry could come in to face Fulham at home.

Left-back Stephen Warnock will be in line for his debut after completing his move from Blackburn on a four-year deal.

Clint Dempsey is expected to overcome an ankle injury for Fulham and Danny Murphy (calf), Paul Konchesky (knee) and Bobby Zamora (Achilles) face late fitness tests.

Andrew Johnson (shoulder), Simon Davies (foot) and Toni Kallio (Achilles) are out.

Jonathan Greening could make his debut but fellow new signing Kagisho Dikgacoi is still lacking match fitness.

Fulham boss Roy Hodgson believes Villa counterpart Martin O Neill has become an unfortunate victim of the increasing demand for success within modern football.

O Neill criticised sections of the Villa Park crowd after his side were booed off following their opening day home defeat to Wigan.

Hodgson was shocked to hear of the booing but admits barracking by the crowd is something that has become part and parcel of the game.

"When you get a couple of defeats then all of a sudden you find yourself in a silly crisis situation now," said Hodgson.

"That's something we have learned from French football, where you can go 17 games unbeaten and get booed off if you lose the 18th. There was a time when that never used to happen but it does now.

"It's unfair but that's the world we live in. We have seen Premier League football almost take over the football interest of the whole of the world.

"You can walk down the street in Russia and get recognised so that's what good it does in terms of globalisation.

"But on the flip side there's more money involved, there's more pressure because no-one wants to move away from the money and results become even more important than they did in the past.

"You're not going to see those things that I vaguely remember from my childhood at Crystal Palace in the third division south when the team was applauded off the pitch having been beaten quite soundly.

"As much as I'd like to see that happen again, I don't think it's going to."

Samuel set for starting role

Jlloyd Samuel could be in line to make his first Premier League start of the season for Bolton as Gary Megson's side host Liverpool.

Samuel was preferred to new signing Paul Robinson for Tuesday's Carling Cup win at Tranmere and could be set to keep his place in the side. Andy O'Brien is also in contention after recovering from a groin strain.

Joey O'Brien and Ricardo Gardner are still nursing long-term problems, but Ricardo Vaz Te is back in training with the squad and hoping to be given a run-out.

Ahead of the game, Megson believes Bolton's most important deals have already been done this summer in retaining the services of key players already in the squad.

Wanderers host Liverpool with the transfer window nearing its close, and with no points on the board so far from two Barclays Premier League games, Megson is keen to bolster his threadbare squad before the September 1 deadline.

The Bolton forward line looks to be a particular concern, with Kevin Davies and Johan Elmander the only recognised strikers currently available and a host of chances squandered in the 1-0 defeats against Sunderland and Hull.

Megson hopes to boost his attacking options with the signing of Cameroon midfielder Achille Emana from Real Betis and the reacquisition of former club captain Kevin Nolan from Newcastle.

But in an unforgiving transfer market, the manager claims that the most significant negotiations have already been completed at the Reebok Stadium.

"We wanted to try and keep as many of those established players as we could, and there are some real good ones in there," Megson said.

"Last year we managed to keep Jussi (Jaaskelainen) and we managed to keep Ali Al Habsi, who would manage to get in most Premier League clubs, so in that position (goalkeeper) we are well stocked.

"Kevin Davies is always linked with some clubs, but nobody has ever been onto me and said that they'll take Kevin, because I think there is a realisation that we just wouldn't entertain it.

"The same goes for Matt Taylor - he came out of Portsmouth's reserves and got 10 goals last year and we need him to start doing the same things again.

"And the biggest one was (Gary) Cahill. Gary came out of Aston Villa's reserves, had a full season here, found himself in the England squad and will kick on and go on even further."

New Liverpool signing Sotirios Kyrgiakos came through a reserve run-out last night and is in line for his Barclays Premier League debut.

The Greece international played 45 minutes of the second string's 3-2 defeat by Blackburn reserves, and with concerns still over Martin Skrtel's jaw injury the new centre-back is set to play at the Reebok.

After two league defeats in three games, boss Rafael Benitez needs to get Liverpool's season on track quickly. But he is still without Fabio Aurelio, Daniel Agger and new midfielder Alberto Aquilani - all long-term injured.

Benitez has questioned Steven Gerrard's form after the two defeats.

The Spaniard has been careful not to be too critical of Gerrard, accepting that even an ordinary Gerrard is better than most midfielders on the planet.

But ahead of the Bolton game, Benitez has gone one step further.

He said: "We have seen Steven playing really well for a while now. He is one of our big names, a key player. He will continue to be that.

"He will know that he has played a couple of games that are not up to his best level. But because he so often plays really well, people maybe can see the difference.

"I know he will be ready now. The players are not stupid, they know when they are not playing well and not up to their best standard. He knows, everybody knows here, that we have to improve."

Andrew Johnson will be absent from the Fulham squad for their match against Chelsea after manager Roy Hodgson confirmed the ligaments around the striker's collarbone snapped in a challenge during the 3-1 win over Amkar Perm.

Hodgson will give fitness tests to Erik Nevland (foot) and Dickson Etuhu (groin) after they were hurt in the same game while Toni Kallio is ruled out with an Achilles injury.

Simon Davies is on course to return from his foot injury while Jonathan Greening could go into the squad if his loan move from West Brom is completed.

Roy Hodgson is under no illusions as to how difficult it will be for Fulham to preserve their 100% record when they take on Chelsea.

The Cottagers go in to the derby full of confidence having registered two Europa League qualifying wins over Vetra, one over Russian side Amkar Perm and another in the league against Portsmouth.

Hodgson admits, however, that Fulham will have to up their game considerably if they are to have any chance of beating title contenders Chelsea.

"It's a very tough game for us because it's a local derby and they are a team who don't lose very many in the course of the season," said Hodgson.

"Everyone seems to think Chelsea this year will have a very good chance of challenging Manchester United and Liverpool for the title with Arsenal as slight outsiders in that group of four.

"When you are playing any of those teams either home or away you know you've got a real tough challenge on your hands.

"We've won all our matches so far and have only conceded one goal which is very satisfying but we know that out of those matches we have played none have been in the top four and we do know that when we do face one of those top four, we will be sorely tested.

"We'll have to play better than we have done in our last four games because the opponent is certainly a step or two higher than the opponents we have faced so far."

Chelsea will be without several first-team players.

New signing Yuri Zhirkov is sidelined with a knee injury while Juliano Belletti (Achilles) and defender Alex (groin) are also set to miss out for Carlo Ancelotti's men.

Joe Cole (knee) and Paulo Ferreira (knee) return to training with the first team next Tuesday.

Carlo Ancelotti insists Andriy Shevchenko has a future at Stamford Bridge despite playing just one game in the last 15 months for the Blues.

The Ukraine striker spent last season on loan under Ancelotti at AC Milan and the Italian coach clearly believes he can get the best out of him in England.

Shevchenko replaced Deco in the second half of their 3-1 victory over Sunderland on Tuesday night.

It was the forward's first appearance in a Chelsea shirt since he scored against Bolton in May 2008.

Shevchenko failed to settle in England and departed for Milan when former boss Luiz Felipe Scolari took charge.

The frontman will be 33 at the end of this month but Ancelotti insists he could have a real part to play in their season.

"At present he is a Chelsea player and in the future he will be the same," said Ancelotti.

"Now he is better condition but we have a lot of strikers at the moment and for him it is not easy to find a place on the pitch.

"He trains very well with no problem and he is very happy to stay. He has a good position in the squad because his team-mates like his work.

"There is a good atmosphere in the team and he knows it is not easy to play for Chelsea because the competition is high in the squad.

"Shevchenko had a physical problem last year but now he has overcome that and we can use his quality for the team this year.

"He has no problem staying here. He wants to play but all the players want to play. When they don't play it is difficult to maintain a good feeling, a good atmosphere and motivation. But now he has a good motivation.

"He does not have a mental problem. He is well. But I have to choose who plays and it is not easy."

Shevchenko's age is not an issue for Ancelotti either. The Italian coach is used to selecting players who are in the twilight of their careers.

Last season he kept faith with 40-year-old Paolo Maldini along with 35-year-olds Dida and Filippo Inzaghi among others.

"I used, in the last year, 38-, 39- and 40-year-olds because these players have experience and a good mental attitude.

"We won a lot with players with experience."

Caldwell out again

Burnley captain Steven Caldwell will miss the visit of Everton to Turf Moor as he continues his recovery from a groin problem.

The defender was injured on international duty with Scotland and has missed the opening two Barclays Premier League matches.

Andre Bikey is expected to retain his place in the team after impressing in the midweek victory over Manchester United just 24 hours after signing from Reading.

But defender Michael Duff is still struggling with an ankle injury which has kept him out of the first two matches.

Meanwhile, Caldwell has hailed fellow Scot David Moyes as one of the best managers in the world.

His absence at Turf Moor will do nothing to dim the admiration he has for Moyes, a former boss at nearby Preston.

"Obviously everybody speaks about Sir Alex Ferguson on a daily basis and talk of him as the greatest manager of all time," said Caldwell.

"But David Moyes is one of the best in the world right now.

"He has to operate at the highest level on a budget which is far below that of the clubs they are trying to compete with.

"Yet he consistently gets his teams to phenomenal positions in the league."

Caldwell has his own Scot to please - and his own highly-rated manager - in Owen Coyle.

Viewed by many as a surprise choice to take over at Burnley less than two years ago, the former St Johnstone boss has gone on to prove what an outstanding prospect he is.

Though committed to Coyle's methods, Caldwell does not believe comparisons to Ferguson and Moyes are deserved just yet - but is convinced one day they will be.

"Owen would be the first to say he doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same way as Sir Alex Ferguson and David Moyes," he said.

"But he definitely has the capability to follow them.

"He is a great man who brings out the best in players. He gives you a freedom to express yourself and enjoy your work.

"It is not an 'anything goes' attitude, if you drop below the standard he thinks you are capable of, he comes down on you like a ton of bricks.

"But we are free to go out and express ourselves. No-one plays with fear. We know what is required and he knows what we are capable of."

Everton have doubts over midfielders Jack Rodwell and Steven Pienaar.

The pair were hurt in the Europa League play-off first-leg win over Sigma Olomouc at Goodison Park, with Rodwell scoring twice in the 4-0 success.

Rodwell has a twisted knee while Pienaar picked up a foot injury.

Everton are also unlikely to have Joleon Lescott back in the squad after he was dropped against the Czech Republic outfit for his poor attitude.

Phil Neville could be set for an extended run at centre-half as the Lescott saga continues to swirl around Everton.

The club captain made a winning start in midweek when he stepped into the role with his side chalking up a 4-0 victory against Sigma Olomouc in the Europa League play-off first leg.

Neville looks certain to retain that slot at Turf Moor as speculation grows that Lescott is edging ever closer to a move to Manchester City.

Lescott was banished from the squad by David Moyes for a bad attitude after two bids were rejected, leaving the manager short of options in that area.

Moyes said: "Phil did a great job as centre half is not his position. He is a terrific pro. He may well have to do it again until the situation changes.

"There were one or two rocky moments but there are going to be until we get at least one centre half, maybe two, depending on what we need."

Moyes is still hurting by the 6-1 defeat by Arsenal but knows it will be tough against a Burnley side, managed by fellow Scot Owen Coyle, that defeat Manchester United in midweek.

Moyes added: "I feel a bit better after our result against the Czechs but it's one game and we've a bit more to go before we recover from the opening day defeat.

"Owen's got Burnley doing really well. They deserved to beat United because of their energy and that will give them great confidence."

Bruce worry over Malbranque

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has a major doubt over midfielder Steed Malbranque ahead of the Premier League clash with Chelsea.

The Frenchman twisted an ankle in Saturday's 1-0 win at Bolton and is rated at 50-50 at best, while Kieran Richardson is struggling with a dead leg suffered in the same game.

Andy Reid missed the trip to the Reebok Stadium with a thigh problem, but was expected to resume training today, while keeper Craig Gordon was on the bench at the weekend as he continues his recovery from a knee injury.

Summer signing Paulo da Silva is working his way back to full match fitness, while Paul McShane remains on the sidelines after knee surgery.

Bruce has warned England captain John Terry he will have his hands full with Darren Bent and Kenwyne Jones.

The 48-year-old sent out his new-look strike-force for the first time at Bolton on Saturday and reaped an early reward for his #10million investment in Bent as the 25-year-old marked his competitive debut for the Black Cats with the winning goal.

But perhaps even more satisfying was the way the former Tottenham man linked up with Jones, who clearly relished his team-mate's contribution after enduring a difficult last campaign alongside Frenchman Djibril Cisse.

Bruce, an accomplished centre-half during his own distinguished playing days, admitted he would not have liked to play against the pair, and promised Terry and his defensive colleagues a difficult visit to the Stadium of Light.

He said: "I don't think they were ever that big when I played - they seem to get bigger now.

"They didn't breed them like that when I was playing, thankfully. Potentially, they have got the makings of a very, very good pair.

"When they are at it, the pair of them, I wouldn't like to play against them. They are a handful for anybody, that's for sure, so I hope that continues."

Chelsea are likely to be without new signing Yuri Zhirkov trip.

Zhirkov is still struggling with a knee injury while full-back Juliano Belletti (Achilles) and defender Alex (groin) are also expected to miss out.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti is pleased with the response from his squad to his tactical changes and the way they are getting used to his diamond system. Their quality has prevented him from adding a `marquee signing' to his squad as yet.

The Italian remains adamant that unless a top player becomes available at the right price, the current squad has enough ability to be successful this season.

"I have seen them playing in the system we want to use and I have options with so many great players to choose from," said Ancelotti.

"We have not had to spend lots and bring in many new players because we are happy with our squad."
